We are located ten minutes from the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The park contains 60,000 acres of virgin timber, secluded lakes, and miles of rivers and streams. There are ninety miles of foot trails, ranging from the one-mile interpretive loop at the Visitor Center to the rugged and challenging 16-mile Lake Superior Trail. A short drive will take you to the scenic Lake of the Clouds or Summit Peak, the highest point in the park. An observation tower at Summit Peak provides an outstanding view of the park, as well as the surrounding areas. On a clear day you may see Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Apostle Islands and Copper Peak. You can also hike portions of the North Country National Scenic Trail or venture into the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness area.
Walking the beach relaxing, searching for stones, polished glass and driftwood or just enjoy the sound of the lake and fresh air. Look for the northern lights or just enjoy the stars. Several pocket beaches are located close by.
In autumn, when the trees begin to turn brilliant colors, you can enjoy an abundance of big game, small game and waterfowl hunting. Whether seated in a bow stand for whitetail deer or black bear, or walking through a stand of aspens for woodcock or ruffed grouse, the forest surrounds you with the beauty of nature.
Boating & Fishing ...
In spring, there is rainbow and speckled trout fishing on many of the local rivers. Northern pike, walleye and panfish abound in the lakes of the area or go lake trout fishing on Lake Superior. Enjoy walleye fishing on the Ontonagon River and Lake Gogebic, the Walleye Capital of the United States.
Lake Superior charter boat service is available, or you can bring your own boat. The Lake Superior Harbor Marina is at the mouth of the Ontonagon River in Ontonagon. In addition, other tie-down sites are available along the Ontonagon River and the Big Iron River.
There is also great canoeing and kayaking along many of the rivers and creeks in the area or on a calm day along the shoreline of Lake Superior.
Cross-County Skiing ...
The Porkies also offer 42 km (25 miles) of groomed, double-tracked trails. High quality, easy-to-use equipment is also available for rent. There are many more trails within a short drive of Superior Shores Resort including: Riddle Farms in Mass City, Bergland trail and Courtney Lake trail both located in the Ottawa National Forest, ABR and Wolverine trails located in Ironwood or Michigan Tech trails, .
Downhill Skiing ...
We are located minutes away from the Porcupine Mountains Ski Area. The Porkies offer 14 runs from novice to expert. The 641-foot vertical drop is the highest in the Midwest, with the longest run being 6,000 feet. Ski rentals, a ski school and a certified ski shop are available. The Porkies offer great snow conditions and a spectacular view of Lake Superior.
With an average snowfall of over 200 inches, the western Upper Peninsula offers miles of well-groomed and marked scenic trails through the Porcupine Mountains and the Ottawa National Forest. View the breathtaking ice caverns, abundant wildlife and the majestic Lake Superior shoreline.
The Porcupine Mountains and Ottawa National Forest provide a multitude of snowshoeing opportunities.
